Grant, James Benton

miner, governor, was born Jan. 2, 1848, in Russell county, Ala. He built the first large smelting works at Leadville in 1878, under the name of J. B. Grant and Co.; and when the fire in that mining camp destroyed the works, he constructed in Denver in 1882, a finer plant than the original one, consolidating his business with another company, under the name of the Omaha and Grant Smelting Co. In 1882 he was nominated for governor and was elected by an overwhelming majority.
