Gadsden, Christopher

congressman, was born in 1724 in Charleston, S.

C. He was elected to the New York congress of 1765, to petition against the stamp act; and a delegate from that state to the continental congress from 1774 to 1776. He was elected governor of the state, but declined to serve on account of his age. He died Aug. 28, 1805, in Charleston, S. C. CHRISTOPHER ED- GADSDEN, WARDS, journalist, bishop, author, was born Nov. 25, 1785, in Charleston, S. C.

He was elected bishop, and was consecrated in Trinity church, Boston, Mass., in 1840. He edited for several years the Gospel Messenger, published a tract on The Prayer-Book as it Is, and three valuable charges to the clergy, and an essay on the life of Bishop Dehon. He died June 24, 1852, in Charleston, S. C.
