Thompson, Hugh S
soldier, educator, governor, was born Jan. 24, 1836, in Charleston, S. C. He served in the confederate army as an officer of the corps of cadets, and in 1865 was elected principal of the Columbia Male academy, which, under his charge, acquired a high reputation as a classical school. In 1876 he was elected state superintendent of education, and was re-elected in 1878 and 1880. In 1882 he was elected governor of South Carolina for the term of two years, and was re-elected in 1884.
