Brown, Neill S
soldier, legislator, governor, was born July, 1810, in Giles county, Tenn. He was a volunteer in the Florida war of 1836-37. In 1842 he was elected a representative in the Tennessee legislature, serving two years; in 1844 was a presidential elector; in 1847 was the candidate of the whig party for governor of Tennessee, and was elected. In 1850 he was appointed minister to Russia, serving four years. In 1855 he was elected to the Tennessee legislature, and became speaker of the house. He died January, 1886, in Nashville, Tenn.
