Brooks, William Robert

astronomer, lecturer, was born June 11, 1844, in England. He invented various improvements in astronomical, photographic, and other scientific instruments. In 1870 he settled in Phelps, N. Y., where in 1874 he founded and became the director of the Red House observatory. 1888 he removed to Geneva, N. Y., to take charge of Smith observatory. His work has consisted largely in the discovery of comets, and thirteen of these bodies have been credited to him since 1881. Six medals have been conferred upon him. In BROOKSHIRE, ELIJAH VOORHEES, farmer, congressman, was born Aug. 15, 1856, in Ladoga, Ind. He was engaged in the practice of the law and farming when elected to the fifty-first and fifty-second congresses; and was re-elected to the fifty-third congress as a democrat. was
