Brooks, John William
soldier, lawyer, was born Oct. 27, 1854, in Rochester, N. Y. On July 15, 1863, he enlisted as a union soldier in company C, fifth regiment veteran reserve corps Indiana infantry, as a drummer, and was the youngest soldier of the war-less than nine years of age. In 1882 he graduated from the Iowa state university and two years later began the practice of law in Ellsworth, Kan. He was in the military band in the procession at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln.
