Bowers, William Wallace

soldier, state senator, congressman, was born Oct. 20, 1834, in Whitestown, N. Y. He enlisted as a private in company I, first Wisconsin cavalry in 1862; and was discharged from the service as second sergeant Feb. 22, 1865. He removed to San Diego in 1869 and in 1873 was elected a member of the California legislature. In 1874 he was appointed collector of customs for the San Diego district, and held the office for eight years; in 1886 he was elected state senator for four years, and was elected to the fifty-second, fifty-third and fifty-fourth congresses as a republican.
