Dix, John Adams
statesman, was born July 24, 1798, in Boscawen, N. H. He was a general and statesman who, while secretary of the treasury in 1861, issued the celebrated order, If any one attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot. He was a United States senator, and governor of New York during 1873-75. He was the author of A Winter in Madeira, and A Summer in Spain and Florence; Speeches and Occasional Addresses; and Resources of the State of New York. He died April 21, 1879.
