Barnard, Henry
educator, author, was born Jan. 24, 1811, in Hartford, Conn.
In 1837 he was elected a member of the legislature of Connecticut, and was twice re-elected to that office, during which time he effected a reorganization of the state common school system. He was superintendent of public schools in Rhode Island from 1843-49; state superintendent of school architecture from 1850 to 1854; and began the American Journal of Education in 1855. He became president of the American association for the advancement of education. He is the author of several educational works, including Story of Education in Connecticut, and Educational Biography.
