Bancroft, Hubert Howe

publisher, author, was born May 5, 1832, in Granville, Ohio. Early in life he moved to San Francisco, Cal., and there opened the first book store on the Pacific coast. He subsequently added a publishing establishment, which has become the largest publishing house west of New York city. He has impressed himself upon the literature of the nineteenth century, by a colossal work entitled History of the Pacific States of North America, including Central America, Mexico, California, Oregon and British Columbia, in thirtynine volumes. He is also the author of The Native Races of the Pacific States, in five volumes; The Early American Chroniclers; Popular History of the Mexican People; Literary Industries, an autobiography; The Book of the Fair; and Wealth of Nations.
