Sumter, Thomas
soldier, diplomat, United States senator, was born July 14, 1736, in Virginia. He was a distinguished soldier of the American revolution, and was citizen of South Carolina. He was promoted, in 1780, from the office of colonel to that of brigadier general.
For his services he received the thanks of congress and the applause of his country. He was a representative in congress from South Carolina from 1789 to 1793. In 1801 he was elected a senator in congress, serving until 1809, when he was appointed minister to Brazil. After spending two years abroad, he returned home and was again elected to the senate. He died June 1, 1832, near Camden, S. C.
