Sonntag, William Louis

artist, was born March 2, 1822, in Pittsburg, Pa.

In 1823 his parents moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and he received a thorough education in the Kinmont school in that city. In 1848 he opened a studio in Cincinnati, and was entirely a self-taught artist. In 1853 he made his first visit to Europe; and has since spent two years in Florence studying art. In 1854 he moved to New York city, where he has attained success as an eminent landscape painter.

Since 1861 he has been a member of the National Academy of Design; is a member of the American Water-Color society; the Artist Fund society, and various other institutions. His most notable pictures are Progress of Civilization; Spirit of Solitude; Evangeline; and A Dream of Italy.
