Smith, Oliver
philanthropist, was. born in January, 1766, in Hatfield, Mass.
He was a magistrate for forty years; twice a representative to the state legislature; and in 1820 was a member of the state constitutional convention. He acquired large wealth by stock-raising; which he bequeathed to establish the Smith charities, a unique system of benevolence, now holding one million dollars, the interest... of which is extended in marriage portions to poor and worthy young couples. He died Dec. 22, 1845, in Hatfield, Mass.
