PETTIT, THOMAS McKEAN

lawyer, jurist, author, was born Dec. 26, 1797, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was city solicitor of Philadelphia in 1820, and shortly afterward was deputy state attorney-general. He was in the legislature in 1830-31; associate judge of the district court in 1832- 35; and its presiding judge for the next ten years, subsequently declining further service. In 1853 he became director of the United States mint, which post he held for a month before his death. He died May 30, 1853, in Philadelphia, Pa.
