Pettit, John
lawyer, jurist, congressman, United States senator, was born June 24, 1807, in Sackett's Harbor, N. Y.
He was a member of the Indiana state legislature; and United States district attorney. He served in the house of representatives in congress from 1843 to 1847; and in the United States senate from 1853 to 1855. He was a presidential elector in 1852; and in 1859 was appointed chief justice of the federal courts of Kansas. He died Jan. 17, 1877, in Lafayette.
