Pettus, Edmund Winston

soldier, lawyer, jurist, United States senator, was born July 6, 1821, in Limestone county, Ala. He was elected judge of the seventh circuit of Alabama in 1855, but resigned that office in 1858, and removed to Dallas county, where he now resides.

In 1861 he went into the confederate army as major of the twentieth Alabama infantry; and in 1863 was made a brigadiergeneral of infantry, and served till the close of the war. He was elected by the legislature of Alabama United States senator for the term commencing March 4, 1897.

PETZEL, ERNST AUGUST EDWARD, educator, lecturer, author, was born July 12, 1866, in Koënigsberg, Prussia. At the age of sixteen he entered the university of Watertown, Wis.; and subsequently studied in Berlin. After receiving his degree of Ph.

D., he returned to America, and has since held several honorable professorships in the leading institutions. In 1894 he was called to the chair of philosophy and Teutonic languages in the Augustana college of Canton, S. D. He has devoted much time to literary pursuits-in writing poetry, stories, scientific articles and translating from German into English, and English into German.

He is a great student and a brilliant lecturer.
