Jackson, James (Soldier lawyer governor United)

soldier, lawyer, governor, United States senator, was born Sept. 21, 1757, in England. He was a member of the conven-- tion which formed. the first constitution of Georgia; was chosen a representative in congress in 1789 from Georgia; and after the close of his first term successfully contested the seat of Anthony Wayne.

In 1793 he was chosen a senator, which office he resigned in 1795. He was major-general of the Georgia militia; and was governor of the state from 1798 until his election as United States senator in 1801. He died March 16, 1806, in Washington, D. C.
