Jackson, James (Lawyer jurist congressman)

lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Oct. 18, 1819, in Jefferson county, Ga. In 1842 he was elected secretary of the senate of Georgia, holding the office one year. In 1845 he was elected to the state legislature, and re-elected to the same position in 1847.

In 1849 he was chosen judge of the western circuit of his state, and was elected to the same office by the people in 1853, and again in 1857. In June of that year he was nominated for congress, resigning his judgeship, and in October following was elected a representative to the thirty-fifth congress. He was re-elected to the thirty-sixth congress; resigned in February, 1861; and returned to Georgia..

He died Jan. 13, 1887, in Atlanta, Ga.
