Gilman, Mrs. Stella Scott

GILMER, GEORGE ROCKINGHAM, soldier, congressman, governor, was born April 11, 1790, in Oglethorpe county, Ga.

He was first lieutenant of the forty-third regiment, United States army, and participated in the Creek war. In 1818 he entered upon the practice of his profession; and was elected to the state legislature in 1818, 1819, and 1824. He was a representative in congress from Georgia from 1821 to 1823, from 1827 to 1829, and from 1833 to 1835; and was governor of the state for the terms commencing in 1829 and 1837. He was the author of a book entitled The Georgians, which contains much useful and interesting information touching the early settlement of his native state. He died Nov. 15, 1859, in Lexington, Ga.
