Gilman, John Taylor
soldier, congressman, governor, was born Dec. 19, 1753, in Exeter, N. H. He was a volunteer in the revolutionary army; a delegate from New Hampshire in 1780 to the Hartford convention; a delegate to the continental congress in 1782 and 1783, the latter year succeeding his father as treasurer of New Hampshire. He was governor of New Hampshire from 1794 to 1805, and again from 1813 to 1815, when he declined a re-election. He died Sept. 1, 1828, in New Hampshire.
