Gallatin, Albert
diplomat, statesman, author, was born Jan. 29, 1761, in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1793 he was elected a senator in congress from Pennsylvania, serving from 1795 to 1801. In the latter year he was appointed secretary of the treasury.
He was president of the National bank of New York, and advocated the establishment of the New York university. He was the author of Considerations on the Currency and Banking System of the United States; Synopsis of the Indian Tribes; Notes on the Semi-Civilized Nations of Mexico, Yucatan and Central America; Peace with Mexico; and War Expenses. His writings have been edited in six volumes. He died Aug. 12, 1849, in Astoria, N. Y.
