Brown, William J

journalist, public official, congressman, was born in 1805 in Kentucky. He was at one time secretary of state for Indiana, and a member of the state legislature; and was a representative in congress from Indiana from 1843 to 1845, and again from 1849 to 1851.

He was assistant postmaster-general under President Polk. He was editor of the Indiana Sentinel; state librarian of Indiana; and, at the time of his death special agent of the post office department for Indiana and Illinois. He died March 18, 1857, in Indianapolis, Ind.
