Brooks, James
journalist, congressman, was born Nov. 10, 1810, in Portland, Maine. In 1835 he was elected to the legislature of Maine; and in 1836 established the New York Daily Express, of which he was the chief editor and proprietor. In 1847 he was elected a member of the New York legislature; from 1849 to 1853 was a representative in congress from the city of New York; and reelected to the thirty-eighth, thirty-ninth, fortieth, forty-first, forty-second and forty-third congresses.
