Brandreth, Benjamin

manufacturer, state senator, was born June 22, 1808, in England. After coming to America he graduated from the Eclectic Medical college of New York city. In 1857, he built the Brandreth house of New York city. The secret of the enormous sale of the Brandreth medicines lay in the fact that during the first fifteen years or more, he expended almost his entire profits of $150,000 a year in advertising.

He was elected to the state senate in 1849, and served four years. He was frequently a delegate to the conventions of his party. He died Feb. 19, 1880, in Sing Sing, N. Y.
