Baker, James H
soldier, public official, was born May 6, 1829, in Monroe, Ohio. He received his education at the Wesleyan university of that state; became a teacher, and had charge of a female seminary at Richmond, Ind. In 1853 he purchased the Scioto Gazette and became its editor; in 1855 was elected secretary of state for Ohio, and subsequently removed to Minnesota and became the secretary of that state. He served as a colonel in the army in 1862 and 1863; was made provost-marshal for the department of Missouri, and served as such until the close of the rebellion, having been made a brigadier-general. He was then appointed register of public lands at Boonville, Mo., and in 1871 was appointed commissioner of pensions, resigning the position in 1875. once
