Allen, John Beard
lawyer, congressman, United States senator, was born May 18, 1845, in Crawfordsville, Ind. He was educated in Wabash college, Crawfordsville; was a private soldier in the one hundred and thirty-fifth regiment of Indiana volunteers; removed with his father's family. to Rochester, Minn., where he resided until 1870; here he read law, and was admitted to practice. He removed to Washington territory in 1870, and entered upon the practice of his profession. He was appointed United States attorney for Washington territory April, 1875, by President Grant, and continued in that office until July, 1885; and was reporter of the supreme court of Washington territory from 1878 to 1885. He was elected to the fifty-first congress as a republican from the territory of Washington; was elected to the United States senate under the provisions of the act of congress admitting Washington territory into the union; and took his seat Dec. 2, 1889. His term of service expired March 3, 1893.
ALLEN, JOHN J. congressman, jurist, was born in Virginia. He was a resident of Harrison county; and was elected a representative in congress from Virginia, from 1833 to 1835. Subsequently he held the office of chief justice of the supreme court of Virginia.
