Vertin, John
bishop, was born July 17, 1844, in Austria. In 1863 he emigrated to the United States, and two years later was ordained priest, and was placed in charge of the Mission church of Houghton, Michigan. After five years spent there he labored for eight years among the Catholics of Negaunee. In 1879 he was consecrated bishop of Marquette and Sault de Ste. Marie, and has sixty priests under his care. He has built St. Peter's cathedral of Marquette, which is one of the finest cathedrals in America; and established numerous churches.
