Trumbull, Lyman
lawyer, congressman, United States senator, was born Oct. 12, 1813, in Colchester, Ohio. He became a member of the legislature of Illinois in 1840; was secretary of the state of Illinois in 1841 and 1842; and was a justice of the supreme court of Illinois from 1848 to 1853. He was elected a representative from Illinois to the thirtyfourth congress; and was elected a senator in congress for the term commencing in 1855 and ending in 1861. He was reelected for the term ending in 1867. In 1867 he was re-elected to the senate for the term ending in 1873.
