Trumbull, Jonathan (Congressman United States)

congressman, United States senator, governor, was born March 26, 1740, in Lebanon, Conn.

He was for several years a representative in the state legislature of Connecticut, and speaker of the house. He was a presidential elector in 1797, 1801 and 1805; and was a representative in congress from that state from 1789 to 1795. He was elected speaker of the house of representatives in 1791, and continued in that station until transferred to the United States senate in 1795, where he served only one year. He was elected lieutenant-governor of Connecticut, and resigned the senatorship; and in 1798 was elected governor. He died Aug. 7, 1809, in Lebanon, Conn.
