H. While owning an interest in the hat industry, he is preeminently a commission merchant; and in this capacity he now represents upward of forty hat manufacturing concerns, among them the largest not only in the United States but in the world.

Prominent in the town of Methuen, N.

Y., is a shaft in a val officer, was born March 23, 1824, in granite and bronze, erected by him at a C cost of $20,000, to commemorate the memory of the men of Methuen who fell on southern battlefields. The town supplied a company of the sixth Massachusetts infantry, the first regiment to pass through Baltimore for the defense of Washington upon the outbreak of the war.
