Swain, David Lowry
lawyer, jurist, college president, governor, author, was born Jan. 4, 1801, near Asheville, N.
C. In 1824 he was elected to represent Buncombe county, N. C., in the house of commons of the state. In 1831 he was appointed judge of the supreme court; from 1832 to 1835 was governor of the state.
From that time until his death he was president of the university of North Carolina. He published British Invasion of North Carolina; and other works. He died Sept. 3, 1868, in Chapel Hill, N. C.
