Spencer, James Grafton

farmer, legislator, congressman, was born Sept. 13, 1844, near Port Gibson, Miss. He entered Oakland college in 1861 and after passing the freshman class entered the confederate army as private in Cowan's battery of light artillery, serving until the close of the war in the army of Mississippi and Tennessee. He returned to his ancestral home and began farming, which he has followed since, living in the house in which he was born. In 1892 he was sent as representative to the state legislature, serving two sessions; and was elected to the fifty-fourth congress as a democrat.
