Spencer, James Clark

lawyer, jurist, was born May 29, 1826, in Fort Covington, N. Y. He received his education in the Fort Covington academy; and commenced the practice of law in 1850 in his native county.

Four years later he moved to Ogdensburg; in 1857 he was appointed United States district attorney for the northern district of New York; and after the expiration of his term moved to New York city, where he has since practiced his profession with success. He served with distinction as judge of the superior court of New York; in 1875 he was appointed a referee in the case of the receiver of the Erie Railway company; and in 1883 he was one of the commissioners for building a new aqueduct for the city of New York.
