Seward, Frederick A

lawyer, state legislator, was born in New York.

He was for several years an assistant secretary of the state department; in 1866 was commissioned to negotiate for the cession of Samana Bay; and was subsequently elected to the legislature of New York.

SEWARD, FREDERICK WILLIAM, journalist, lawyer, author, was born July 8, 1830, in Auburn, N. Y. He was associate editor of the Albany Evening Journal till 1861, when he was appointed assistant secretary of state, which office he held for the eight years that his father was secretary. He was a member of the New York legislature in 1875. He assistant secretary of state again in 1877- 81. His principal publication is the Life and Letters of his father. was
