Roberts, Oran Milo
soldier, lawyer, jurist, agriculturist, educator, governor, was born July 9, 1815, in Laurens district, S. C. In 1841 he moved to Texas, and settled at St. Augustine in the practice of his profession; and in 1844 was appointed district attorney, holding the office until the annexation of Texas to the United States. In 1846 he was appointed judge of the fifth judicial district of Texas; and in 1857 was elected an associate justice of the supreme court of Texas. In 1862 he resigned and entered the confederate army as colonel of the eleventh Texas infantry. He was elected a United States senator, but was not admitted to his seat. From 1868 to 1870 he was professor of law and agriculture in the institute at Gilmer, Texas. In 1874 he was appointed chief justice of the state; and was elected to that position in 1876. In 1878 he was elected governor of Texas; and was re-elected in 1880. In 1883 he became professor of law in the university of Texas. He was the author of Governor Robinson's Texas.
