Roberts, James Arthur

soldier, lawyer, state legislator, was born March 8, 1847, in Waterboro, Maine. In 1870 he graduated from Bowdoin college. At the age of seventeen he joined the seventh Maine battery, and took part in the final engagements of the civil war. After leaving college he taught school in Portland, Maine; and in 1875 was admitted to the bar at Buffalo, N. Y.

During 1879-80 he was a member of the New York state assembly. He was appointed a member of the park commission; and has been vice-president, director, attorney, or secretary of a score of institutions in the state of New York. In 1893 he was elected state comptroller for the state of New York.
