Post, Philip Sidney

soldier, congressman, was born March 19, 1833, in Florida, N. Y. He entered the union army in 1861 as second lieutenant fifty-ninth Illinois infantry, and was promoted brigadier-general by brevet. He was appointed consul to Vienna in 1866; was promoted consulgeneral for Austria- Hungary in 1874; and was a member at large of the Illinois republican state central committee from 1882 to 1886. He was commander department of Illinois Grand Army of the Republic in 1886. He was elected to the fiftieth, fifty-first, fifty-second, fifty-third and fifty-fourth congresses. He died Jan. 6. 1895, in Washington, D. C., before taking his seat in the fifty-fourth congress.
