Posey, Thomas

soldier, United States senator, was born July 9, 1750, in Virginia. From 1786 to 1793 he was county lieutenant of Spottsylvania, Va., and was appointed brigadier-general. He was a state senator; and was lieutenant-governor of Virginia for four years. He was major-general of Kentucky levees in 1809.

He was United States senator from Louisiana in 1812, by appointment of the governor. He was governor of Indian territory from 1813 to 1816; and was agent of Indian affairs in 1816, which position he held until his death. He died March 19, 1818, in Shawneetown, Ill.
