soldier, jurist, was born Feb. 22, 1752, in Frederick county, Va. He was appointed a lieutenant in the continental army in 1776; was promoted to a captaincy, and served in Col.

Daniel Morgan's regiment until 1779, when he was appointed aid to Gen. William Woodford; and in 1780 was surrendered with him a prisoner of war in the siege of Charleston. In the war of 1812 he was a brigadier-general of militia; and an unsuccessful candidate of the federal party for congress in 1889. He was a justice of Augusta county, Va., for more than fifty years; was twice high sheriff, and died in that county Feb. 13, 1843.
