Pinckney, Henry Laurens
lawyer, state legislator, congressman, author, was born Sept. 24, 1794, in Charleston, S.
C. He was a member of the South Carolina legislature from 1816 to 1832; and was mayor of Charleston in 1832, and in 1839 and 1840. He was a representative in congress from South Carolina from 1833 to 1837; and was subsequently collector of the port, and a member of the legislature. He was editor of the Charleston Mercury in 1819; and was a prominent leader in the state rights party. He was the author of Memoirs of Jonathan Maxey; Robert Y. Hayne; and Andrew Jackson. He died Feb. 3, 1863, in Charleston, S. C.
