Physick, Philip Syng

surgeon, was born July 7, 1768, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a student of the celebrated John Hunter, and distinguished himself by his faithful attention to his professional duties during the frightful mortality caused by the yellow fever in Philadelphia, 1793, when not only citizens, but even physicians, fled from the city. In 1825 he was elected a member of the French Royal Academy of Medicine, and is said to be the first American who received this honor. He died Dec. 15, 1837, in Philadelphia, Pa.
