Phenix, Stephen Whitney

benefactor, author, was born May 25, 1839, in New York city. He left his books relating to heraldry and genealogy to the New York Historical society, together with a legacy of $15,000, the income of which is to be invested in books on kindred subjects. His curiosities, works of art, pictures, and coins, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and his general library of books, to be known as The Phoenix Collection, to Columbia, with $500,000 for technical use, eventually, in the school of mines. He died Nov. 3, 1881, in New York city.
