soldier, lawyer, jurist, state legislator, governor, was born Nov. 2, 1844, in Underhill, Vt. In 1876 and 1877 he was state's attorney for Chittenden county, Vt., and in 1880 and 1881 was a representative in the Vermont legislature. In 1882 he was appointed assistant United States attorney for the territory of Dakota; and in 1883 was appointed a member of the territorial board of tax commissioners. In 1884 he was appointed an associate justice of the supreme court of the territory of Dakota. He was judge advocate general for Dakota for the year 1885.
