Perry, Oliver Hazard
naval officer, was born Aug. 23, 1785, in South Kingston, R. I. Perry's victory in the battle of Lake Erie, Sept. 10, 1813, with his laconic dispatch to Gen. Harrison, We have met the enemy and they are ours, makes his name one to glitter on the page of American history.
He was greatly honored for what he accomplished, the United States congress voting him thanks, a medal and the rank of captain.
He died Aug. 23, 1819, on the Island of Trinidad. A granite obelisk was erected to his memory by the state of Rhode Island.
