Smith, William E
soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born March 14, 1829, in Augusta, Ga. In 1850 he was made solicitor-general for the southwestern circuit. In 1861 he entered the confederate army in the fourth Georgia regiment as first lieutenant; was elected captain in 1862; and lost a leg in front of Richmond. In 1863 he was elected to the confederate house of representatives, and continued in that office during its existence. He then engaged in agricultural pursuits and cotton planting; and was elected a representative from Georgia to the forty-fourth, forty-fifth and fortysixth congresses as a democrat.
