In 1851 he was appointed chief justice of the United States court for the territory of Oregon.

NELSON, THOMAS AMOS ROGERS, lawyer, congressman, was born March 19, 1812, in Roane county, Tenn. He served as a representative from Tennessee to the thirtysixth congress; and was re-elected to the thirty-seventh congress, but was prevented from taking his seat by the forcible action of the confederate government.

He died Aug. 24, 1873, in Knoxville, Tenn.
