Nelson, Thomas (Signer of the declaration)

signer of the declaration of independence, was born Dec. 26, 1738, in Yorktown, Va. He was elected to the Virginia house of burgesses; and was re-elected to that position. After attending various local conventions he was elected a delegate to the continental congress from 1775 to 1777, and again from 1779 to 1780. He was a signer of the declaration of independence; took part in the military affairs of the time as a brigadiergeneral; and served in the state legislature. In 1781 he was elected governor of Virginia.

He died Jan. 4, 1789, in Hanover county, over county, Va.
