He moved to Texas in 1849; was a memwas a member of the Texas legislature in 1859 and 1860; and was colonel of the Tenth Texas regiment. He was elected to congress as a democrat in 1873 and served continuously until he resigned to accept the position of United States senator, to which he was elected in 1892. He was re -elected in 1893. was
