Macarthur, Arthur
lawyer, jurist, lieutenant-governor, author, was born Jan. 26, 1815, in Scotland. He settled in Wisconsin; was lieutenant-governor of that state in 1856; and was elected to a judgeship in that state, which position he held until 1869. In 1870 he was appointed one of the justices of the supreme court of the United States for the District of Columbia. He is the author of Lectures on the Law; Reports of Supreme Court Cases; and Education in its Relation to Manual Industry. MACARTHUR, CHARLES LAFAY- ETTE, journalist, state senator, was born Jan. 7, 1824, in Claremont, N. H. About 1842 he removed to Milwaukee, and became the first editor of the Sentinel. In 1846-47 he was city editor of the New York Sun. In 1864 he established the Troy News, one of the earliest Sunday newspapers except those published in New York city. In 1881-83 he was a member of the New York state senate.
