Mellen, W. H

merchant, educator, poet, was born Aug. 5, 1840, in Gerry, N. Y. In 1878 he closed out his mercantile business in Chautauqua and moved to Lane, Kan., and subsequently to Greeley, where he took charge of the city schools for two years. He has served as county register of deeds and county treasurerat Garnett; where he has also been engaged in the wholesale and retail business. He has contributed extensively to current publications; and some of his poems have been given a place in Poets of America and other standard works.
